Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you’ll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
DigitalOcean’s Core Compute organization provides reliable, high-performance virtual machine infrastructure (Droplets), scalable Autoscale Pools, and flexible resource allocation systems that allow millions of developers to run critical applications confidently at scale. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer I to join our Compute Platform Services team. This team is responsible for building the scalable backend infrastructure, control planes, and hypervisor-orchestration engines that provision, lifecycle-manage, and scale compute workloads safely and reliably.
In this role, you will help design and develop high-throughput backend systems that orchestrate complex VM placement and execution workflows, interface with hypervisor control layers, and process real-time resource-telemetry signals. You will work on solving distributed systems problems at the intersection of host infrastructure orchestration, hypervisor management, and asynchronous control flows, ensuring our core compute platforms are robust, scalable, and highly available.
What you'll do- Designing, building, and maintaining robust backend services and highly concurrent asynchronous workflows for virtual machine provisioning, placement, and lifecycle management, primarily in Python and Go.
- Integrating backend control planes with hypervisor and host virtualization layers (e.g., KVM, QEMU) to safely manage compute resources, block storage attachments, and virtual networking context.
- Building and operating scalable APIs (gRPC, REST) to serve as the connective tissue across compute orchestration engines, host metadata services, and internal infrastructure platforms.
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure host infrastructure reliably supports high-density hyperthreading, autoscale policies, and customer SLA guarantees.
- Driving engineering best practices, including code reviews, comprehensive testing, and technical design documentation.
- Monitoring core system performance, investigating control-plane bottlenecks, and ensuring high reliability of compute orchestration systems.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building highly concurrent, fault-tolerant distributed systems.Deep proficiency in Python and Go (or strong experience in C++/Java with a willingness to master Python and Go quickly).
- Hands-on experience with durable workflow orchestration engines for managing distributed state, hardware scheduling, and long-running asynchronous tasks.
- Strong working knowledge of virtualization, hypervisors, containerization, or low-level system isolation technologies (e.g., KVM, QEMU, libvirt, Docker, or microVMs).
- Experience building resilient APIs and handling high-throughput telemetry, control-plane signals, or message streams.
- A strong sense of ownership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team.
- Cloud Infrastructure Awareness: While you do not need to be a kernel developer, you possess a strong foundational understanding of host resource scheduling, storage/network virtualization trade-offs, and the unique architectural challenges of building multi-tenant infrastructure.
