Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
The Enterprise Clinical Data Hub (ECDH) team is seeking a Software Engineer to play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, cloud-native solutions that power clinical data integration across Optum Care.
In this role, you will move beyond feature development to own end-to-end services, contribute to architectural decisions, and help drive modernization efforts from legacy platforms into ECDH. You will work at the intersection of Java full-stack engineering, data platforms, and healthcare interoperability, enabling high-quality clinical data for downstream analytics and care outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and own end-to-end full-stack solutions using Java (Spring Boot) and modern UI frameworks (React/Angular)
  • Build and optimize scalable APIs, microservices, and event-driven services supporting high-volume clinical data ingestion and delivery
  • Contribute to system design and architecture discussions, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and performance
  • Lead or significantly contribute to data integration pipelines, including validation, transformation, and quality enforcement
  • Develop intuitive UI/UX components for internal platforms, dashboards, and operational tools
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data Engineering, Architecture, and Clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Ensure code quality, testability, and maintainability, including implementing automated testing strategies
  • Support production deployments, monitoring, and incident resolution in cloud environments
  • Identify and implement performance optimizations, technical debt reduction, and reliability improvements
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team best practices
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Solid proficiency in Java and Spring Boot for building enterprise-grade backend systems
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
  • Solid experience with front-end development (React/Angular, JavaScript, HTML, CSS)
  • Experience working with relational databases (SQL) and data modeling
  • Hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices
  • Solid understanding of system design principles, including scalability, fault tolerance, and performance
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize production systems

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cloud-native development (Azure preferred) including services, networking, and deployment models
  • Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, messaging systems)
  • Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, code generation, intelligent testing tools) to improve developer productivity and code quality
  • Hands-on experience building or integrating AI/ML-powered services or components, such as:
    • REST APIs wrapping ML models or inference services
    • NLP/clinical text processing solutions
    • AI-driven data validation, enrichment, or anomaly detection
    • Integration with enterprise AI platforms or model hosting services
  • Knowledge of healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7, CCDs)
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven exposure to Snowflake or large-scale data platforms
  • Proven background in data quality frameworks or data validation pipelines

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
