Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you’ll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our User & Account Systems team. This team owns the core primitives that every DigitalOcean customer interacts with Teams, Organizations, Projects, resource Tags, and the customer console experience itself at cloud scale, handling millions of events per second.
In this role, you will own significant technical workstreams within Account Management; not just implementing features, but shaping how they are designed, scaled, and operated. You will go deep on high-throughput distributed systems challenges, drive sustaining engineering priorities across the domain, and actively raise the technical quality of the team around you. If you are a strong engineer who wants to combine technical depth with growing cross-team influence, this is the team for you.
What you’ll do- Own Technical Workstreams: Design and build high-throughput, scalable systems for core account primitives; Teams, Organizations, Projects, and Tags; taking end-to-end ownership of architecture, implementation, and production operation.
- Drive the Console Roadmap: Lead the design and delivery of significant console-facing capabilities, such as advanced reporting dashboards and notification systems, making architectural trade-offs that affect multiple downstream teams.
- Lead Sustaining Engineering: Drive prioritization and resolution of technical debt, aging tickets, and security rule coverage gaps across the Account Management domain, establishing what "good" looks like, not just executing against a list.
- Architect for Scale: Design data models and service boundaries that hold up under millions of events per second, anticipating failure modes and designing for graceful degradation.
- Operational Leadership: Drive reliability and performance improvements across user account-managing systems; lead incident response and postmortems for complex, cross-service issues.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Partner closely with Product Management and Design to shape the Accounts roadmap itself, bringing technical feasibility and risk into early-stage planning rather than receiving fully-scoped requirements.
- Mentor & Elevate: Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing — raising the technical bar of the team without needing to formally lead workstreams.
- Apply Security & Cloud Depth: Use deep knowledge of cloud security models and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Helm, Chef) to harden account-managing systems against real-world threats.
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 5–8 years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record delivering complex, cloud-scale distributed systems — ideally in user account management, identity, or customer experience domains.
- Language Proficiency: Strong proficiency in Go and JavaScript/Node.js, with the ability to make sound architectural calls in both. Exposure to Python, Rust.
- Systems Depth: Proven experience designing and implementing high-throughput, scalable systems handling large data volumes — millions of events per second is the working scale, not the stretch goal.
- Cloud Native: Deep experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, Azure), strong understanding of cloud security models, and hands-on Infrastructure as Code expertise (Terraform, Helm, Chef).
- Distributed Systems: Solid grounding in distributed systems and microservices architecture — able to reason about consistency, partitioning, and failure modes under load.
- Communication: Able to collaborate effectively across a global organization and clearly communicate technical decisions and trade-offs to both engineers and product stakeholders.
- Knowledge of cryptography and secure communication protocols.
- Contributions to open-source security or distributed-systems projects.
- Experience with identity and access management systems specifically.
