Position Summary
As a Senior or Staff Software Engineer, Backend on our Platform Engineering team, you bring deep technical expertise to the design and delivery of the foundational services and developer tools that power League’s engineering organization; working inside our pod-based delivery model alongside the teams that build on your services.
You take ownership of complex, ambiguous problems across the platform’s backend systems, from service architecture to production reliability, and set the technical bar through your own work.
At Senior level, that ownership centers on your own services and team. At Staff level, it extends across pods; setting architecture direction, raising engineering standards platform-wide, and mentoring senior engineers. Both levels partner closely with Platform Engineering leadership, Product, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure the platform scales with League’s growth
In this role, you will:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, resilient backend platform services and internal developer tooling using Go, Kubernetes, MongoDB, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Own outcomes end to end; partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to shape solutions, clarify assumptions, make pragmatic trade-offs, and carry work from technical design through production delivery and operation
- Lead technical design and planning for platform initiatives, authoring and reviewing architecture decision records: at Staff level, own architecture direction across multiple pods
- Contribute beyond your primary backend specialization across services, data, infrastructure, web, and mobile codebases when needed to deliver pod outcomes using AI-assisted development to navigate unfamiliar stacks, while applying strong engineering judgment and remaining accountable for the quality of every change
- Apply advanced AI-assisted engineering practices; coding agents, multi-agent workflows, context engineering, MCP and tool integrations, and AI-supported planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and code review — while remaining accountable for understanding, validating, explaining, and operating every change you ship
- Uphold engineering quality through rigorous code review, automated testing, and performance monitoring across the platform
- Debug and resolve complex production issues, including participating in an on-call rotation to support platform reliability
- Mentor and coach engineers, raising the bar for best practices: at Staff level, mentor senior engineers and influence standards platform-wide
- Partner with Engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to shape the platform roadmap and drive adoption: at Staff level, represent Platform Engineering in cross-pod forums and contribute to hiring
About You:
- 7+ years (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) of experience building and operating scalable backend software in production, with a track record of increasing scope and technical ownership
- Hands-on expertise with Go for backend services, Kubernetes for container orchestration, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Experience with MongoDB for data persistence, and building or integrating authentication/authorization systems such as OAuth
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and API design
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining automated test suites and driving engineering best practices
- Hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent) as a genuine daily multiplier. At Staff level, a track record of advanced AI-assisted practices (agents, MCP/tool integrations) and using AI beyond code generation
- Diploma/degree nice to have, not required
Preferred candidate attributes:
- Operates with a high degree of autonomy, exercising sound technical judgment on ambiguous or open-ended problems with minimal guidance (at Staff level, sets direction across pods, not just your own team)
- Sets technical direction and best practices for the team, and is looked to as a go-to technical resource by peers
- Proactively identifies risks, technical debt, and system-level opportunities, and drives them to resolution
- Communicates complex technical concepts clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders
- Actively mentors and coaches other engineers, giving timely, constructive feedback
- Pod-native collaborator: transparent updates, tight weekly goals, and surfacing blockers and cross-pod dependencies early
- Balances hands-on delivery with cross-team collaboration, and understands how their work connects to broader platform and company objectives
