The Team: As a key part of Morningstar's Global MID organization, the Media Data Service team supports journalists worldwide by delivering accurate, timely, and context‑rich investment data. The team is responsible for interpreting media data requests, identifying the most suitable datasets within Morningstar Direct and other internal databases, performing analytical transformations to ensure insights are meaningful, accurate, and aligned with market trends.
In addition to reactive support, the team provides proactive data-driven storytelling by curating relevant content and distributing it to global media partners. The team also plays a central role in training journalists on the effective use of Morningstar Direct, partnering with cross-functional groups to stay aligned on methodological updates, and documenting best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across markets.

- Engage with journalists to understand their data needs, interpret requests, and determine the most appropriate datasets using Morningstar Direct and other internal databases.
- Extract, clean, and transform data primarily using Excel to create clear, accurate outputs and validate whether trends align with market movements.
- Provide ad-hoc training sessions and guidance to journalists on how to navigate and use Morningstar Direct effectively for their own research.
- Collaborate closely with Morningstar's Corporate Communications team to develop & distribute data‑driven insights ("data pitches") to media outlets, supporting wider Morningstar storytelling and brand visibility.
- Develop deep expertise in key investment topics including equities, fixed income, mutual funds, and ETFs as well as Morningstar's proprietary methodologies.
- Partner with internal data, research, and product teams to stay aligned on methodology changes, new datasets, and platform enhancements.
- Build and maintain Jupyter notebooks and Excel-based calculation templates to streamline and automate repetitive analytical tasks.
- Document and update best practices to ensure consistent processes, high‑quality outputs, and operational excellence across global workflows.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in financial discipline
- Progress towards CFA Level I preferred
- Preferably experienced in data journalism, investment research, or quantitative roles ideally with a focus on client-facing communication
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including macros and VBA
- Experience coding in SQL and Python is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
- Good to have: Familiarity with Morningstar Direct, experience with European markets is a plus
