About the Team:
The Data Infrastructure team is at the core of StarTree’s SaaS offering - enabling our customers to leverage real-time data to accelerate key decision-making by building world-class data ingestion, processing, and serving systems. The team is responsible for scaling and evolving StarTree’s Pinot Engine and the corresponding data platforms.
About the Role:
We’re looking for a passionate and experienced Staff Performance Engineer to join our team and help us make Apache Pinot the fastest, most efficient, and easy to use real-time OLAP engine on the planet. You will work on building and optimizing the performance of one of the most advanced real-time analytics platforms. If you thrive on solving complex problems in distributed systems, tuning JVM internals, and driving performance improvements through data-driven decision-making, this is the role for you.
Your Mission:
- Identify Bottlenecks: You will focus on customers’ pain points and bottlenecks across Pinot’s ingestion and query pathways. Through profiling, logging, and data collection, you’ll identify areas for improvement.
- Tooling and Automation: Develop and maintain tooling to automate performance measurements, ensuring we capture the right metrics to assess system efficiency.
- Data-Driven Performance Enhancements: Based on real data, you will recommend and drive the delivery of performance improvements that optimize for speed and cost efficiency. You’ll be working closely with engineering teams to implement these changes.
- User-Focused Tuning and Efficiency: Design intuitive tools and resources that allow users to easily tune Pinot for optimal performance and efficiency.
- Benchmarking and Advocacy: Publish performance benchmark results to showcase Pinot’s capabilities, driving adoption and building excitement within the community.
Who You Are:
- You have 4-5+ years of experience in performance engineering roles.
- Strong expertise in Java and a deep understanding of JVM internals.
- You have hands-on experience working with distributed systems and tuning their performance.
- A proactive problem solver who uses data to guide decisions and can work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with profiling, logging, and performance monitoring tools to analyze system bottlenecks.
Bonus Points For:
- Experience with Apache Pinot or other OLAP/real-time databases.
- Familiarity with cloud environments and optimizing cloud-based applications.
