ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re seeking a Director of Quality Engineering to architect, elevate, and scale the quality discipline across Sortly’s product and engineering organization. This leader will oversee a high-performing global team of Quality Engineers (a blend of FTEs and contractors) and will be accountable for building the processes, frameworks, and systems that ensure our product ships with reliability, consistency, and excellence across multiple squads.
The ideal leader is both strategic and hands-on—someone who can set a vision for quality maturity while rolling up their sleeves to implement the standards, automation, and operational rigor needed for a scaling SaaS organization. This role will shape how quality is embedded into every stage of our development lifecycle and will be a critical partner to Engineering, Product, and Data in driving Sortly’s next phase of growth.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Technical Leadership & Automation Enablement
- Stay close to the work by coaching, reviewing, and occasionally jumping into hands-on testing or automation when needed.
- Build and drive a comprehensive test automation strategy that accelerates release cycles, increases coverage, and reduces manual effort.
- Ensure the team has the right tools, frameworks, and automation-first methodologies to operate with speed and accuracy.
- Introduce practices that validate real-world customer scenarios, ensuring our product solves problems seamlessly in “day-in-the-life” workflows.
Quality Engineering Strategy & Customer-Centric Execution
- Own the vision for Quality Engineering and Customer Experience Validation across all squads and product areas.
- Define, implement, and continuously improve processes, standards, and systems that ensure product reliability, performance, and usability.
- Establish a scalable quality operating model that supports rapid development, continuous delivery, and high-quality releases.
- Active part of the leadership Engineering team partnering with Product, and Design to integrate quality early, from concept to deployment. Shifting from “test at the end” to build with quality from the start.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, develop, and elevate a distributed team of Quality Engineers across India (full-time & contract).
- Define clear roles, success metrics, and career pathways for Quality Engineering team members.
- Build a culture of automation-first mindset, customer empathy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Optimize the use of contractors to maximize automation output, efficiency, and value.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Delivery Excellence
- Partner closely with Product and GTM leadership to ensure release readiness and experience-focused checkpoints.
- Influence key product and architecture discussions to embed quality and customer-experience thinking from the start.
- Support sprint planning, design reviews, architecture discussions, and retros to uphold high standards of product excellence.
- Establish clear communication channels and reporting to surface quality insights, automation gains, customer impact, and emerging risks.
Requirements
Must-Have
- 15 years of experience in Quality Assurance, with at least 5 years in people management (leading ICs and/or managers).
- Demonstrated success leading QA teams in a fast-paced, product-led SaaS or technology environment.
- Experience managing both full-time employees and contractors, with ability to structure work for efficiency.
- Strong background in defining QA processes, frameworks, and automation approaches.
Hands-on approach — comfortable rolling up your sleeves to support the team when needed. - Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills; able to influence peers and senior leaders.
- Experience scaling a QA organization during high-growth stages (Series A–D).
- Strong understanding of modern QA automation tools and CI/CD environments.
- Previous experience with a product used across mobile + web platforms.
